Where McKinley County Records Are Kept
McKinley County records are split by function. Court case files are judiciary records. The District Court Clerk or court clerk handles District Court case files, divorce decrees, felony cases, civil cases, contested probate, and family case records. Magistrate and Municipal clerks keep their own lower-court matters. The McKinley County Clerk is a separate county office that handles recorded land documents, marriage licenses and certificates, plats, liens, commission minutes, licenses, and other county records.
The Sheriff's Office keeps incident reports, accident reports, traffic citations issued through that office, and certain law-enforcement records. The Adult Detention Center answers current custody questions, but the research did not locate an official county-hosted public jail roster. For state prison, probation, or parole, use NMCD Offender Search. For federal custody, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.
Note: A court case record, county recorded document, sheriff report, and jail custody record may all require different request channels.

Registered access is especially important when a case result exists but the user needs more than the public docket fields shown in Case Lookup.
The Gallup Municipal Court page is the local source for city traffic, ordinance, petty misdemeanor, DWI, payment, and warrant information.

McKinley County Public Access Rules
New Mexico public access starts with the Inspection of Public Records Act. NMSA 1978 Section 14-2-1 gives every person a right to inspect public records unless an exception applies. Section 14-2-1.1 allows protected personal identifiers to be redacted without closing the entire record. Section 14-2-8 sets formal written-request procedures.
The McKinley County Transparency Portal and county IPRA form list copy fees of $0.50 per one-sided page for documents 11 by 17 inches or smaller, $5 for CD or DVD, and $5 for cassette video or audio. | Authority | Plain Meaning |
|---|---|
| Rule 1-079 NMRA | Court records are generally public unless sealed by order or protected by law. |

| NMSA 14-2-9 | Agencies separate exempt details from nonexempt information and release the rest. |
Restricted McKinley County Records
Some McKinley County court records are not open through public search. Case Lookup no longer displays juvenile criminal cases effective July 1, 2007.
